TERMITE CONTROL SOLUTIONS

Termites are mainly present in subtropical and tropical locations such as Singapore. Our expertise of termite pest control has made us aware of the severe economic effects of termite infestations because they can cause serious structural harm to houses, crops or plantations.

Termites only weigh a few millimetres in length, and their mouth is capable of ripping pieces of wood. Because termites often feed on dead plant material, house foundations, furniture, shelves, and even books are potential termites feeding sites internally.

Also known as’ white ants’, termites thrive in our tropical climate with high humidity and rainfall, and grow very well. There are two major termites species which can cause significant damage, leading to expensive repairs and structural failure. In Singapore, the two types of termites are the subterranean termite and the drywood termite.

Signs of Termites

What do you think of termites? Termites are often mistaken for ants and it is often too late to figure out that they are termites after damage has already been done to homes. One useful method for distinguishing termites and ants is that the waist’s middle segment is much thicker than the ants’; ants have very small waists.

Here are some common signs that you may see (or hear) termites around your home or business premises:

Mud tubes on wall
Subterranean termites create shelter tubes made of dust, soil and debris so as not to be seen to fly to and fro the food source. Such tubes are around the size of a coin and are typically located on exterior and interior walls that lead up to the building's entrance points.
Sightings of termite swarmers (flying termites) or discarded wings
The appearance of swarmers or alates is usually the first indicator of infestation detected by property owners. The remains of discarded wings on window sills and floors are another growing sign.
Papery or hollow sounding timber
Termites typically eat wood from the inside out leaving a thin timber or paint veneer. And if you knock or tap on an area that has damage from the termite, it may sound hollow or feel papery because parts (or all) of the timber have been eaten away.
Tight fitting door or hard to open window
Their excrement or' dust' produces a defensive layer that absorbs heat and moisture as termites devour timber. This causes the timber to swell, making the infested windows and doors more difficult to open or close.
Tunnels in the wood
Also known as ‘galleries’ which are quite difficult to see from the outside.
Termite droppings
The dry wood termites also leave behind brown-colored and grainy faecal mounds after wood consumption. Such faecal pellets are typically found under the wood that is being infested.

You will learn to recognise termites hot spots in your home to test for termite infestation and its activities:

  • Doors and Window Frames
  • Wooden Flooring
  • Roof and Ceiling
  • Built-In Carpentry

Regular routine inspection by an approved pest control technician will help identify the presence of termites early on. Experienced technicians can detect hollow sounds in wood, and when pressed, the sound of soldier termites “creaking” sound responds. Indication of an infestation is not spotted easily by untrained eyes. Termite infestation is typically not noticeable until significant damage is caused. They live in a dim, hot, and secure climate, making them so difficult to locate-until it is too late.

As termites devour their way through wood from the inside, detecting a termite infestation can be very difficult but there are some tell-tale signs suggesting their existence.

Have you seen these signs?

  • Termites eat 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Which means they eat wood continuously and destroy it. Termites will weaken the wood within your home if left unchecked leading to costly damage.
  • After rainfall, you have insects particularly near light sources in and around the house.
  • There are droppings of termites that look like sawdust on doors or sills of windows.
  • Nests build on trees, these are termites nests that can gouge over timber.
  • Wing leftovers are found on the ground.
  • If wood is damaged, and the wood structure falls down in some severe cases.
  • There are mud trails from the earth to the forest as termites create mud tunnels to protect themselves from detection as they pass into your home from their underground colony.
termite queen

Termite Queen

In the termite colony the Queen and King’s job is to reproduce. Beginning as an Alate, they leave the colony of their kin, drop to the ground and shed their wings in search of a nesting place. They care for their children, before they can take over the colony’s duties.

termite soldiers

Termite Workers

Within a colony the workers make up the largest number. They do all the work (except for defending and reproducing): eating, cleaning, nest construction, and tunnels creating. They cause destruction in doing their jobs which affects so many homes.

Termite Soldiers

Soldiers protect the colony against attack by hostile enemies like ants and are fitted with large jaws, sticky fluids or chemical spray.

Identifying Termites

Termites which are also known as’ white ants’ are often confused as an ant. The distinction between termite and ant is that termite has a stomach which is much smaller than an ant.

You will need to be sure in this situation, whether termites invade your home or building and not bees. Termite is one of the pests which are more architecturally and financially harmful.

The situation can be more complicated because termites eat from the inside out and only come to the surface to feed. By then, detection is typically too late in which damage to the termite has been done. Although it is very impossible to see a live termite coming out of its colony nest, live termites feeding from the inside door frames, pieces of furniture, heat technology can be used to detect roof beams.

Therefore, it’s necessary to know the signs of termites to correctly identify the termite pest on your land. One of the main signs is mud trails created by termites for them to drive around in. Wooden furniture that’s been chewed on when stepped on has a cracking appearance.

Correct detection by a skilled, certified pest controller can help to better identify and determine infestation rates. The expert’s sound advice helps save you time, money and stress.

Termite Inspection

To mitigate costly damages and repairs from termite infestation, it is important to have monthly or every 2 months termite inspection. Our Termite Inspection provides you with a full termite assessment for all accessible areas where possible termite problems can occur, so you can have total tranquillity.

After finishing the termite inspection, if active termite behaviours are detected, we will provide you with successful recommendations on the treatments available. But if there is no sign of infestation, our termite experts will advise you, particularly if you live in a high risk area, on a proactive termite monitoring and preventive plan.

By providing early detection of termite activity, a thorough termite inspection by us is the best protection against termites, saving you from serious damage on your house.

Termite Alates

Alates are the winged reproductive species that swarm out of the nest and establish new colonies. Male and female are pairing off and looking for a suitable matting area. These are also mistaken for ant-swarmers.

How we can get rid of Termites for you

We give your home a termite inspection service at a time that’s convenient for you. Through the process we’ll talk to you about how your home could need tenting to conduct the fumigation process.

The termite management products and solutions will ensure your home is not compromised in any way so you can return to home as usual soon as possible. You will also want to perform a pre-home buying termite check to ensure any potential termites problems.

Pre-Construction

In Singapore, soil treatment for the protection of buildings against subterranean termites is undertaken at all construction sites.

Chemicals are added to the soil during ground care. Treatment covers the whole ground floor slab before the concrete floor slab is laid and the layer under the apron before the apron is laid.

Pre Construction or Soil Treatment includes the installation of an anti-termite barrier under the building structure as a defense against damage caused by Subterranean Termites; this treatment is carried out before the building is installed. Before placing the concrete slabs on the ground, the sites are prepared through a water-based termiticide with the use of hydraulic spray nozzles. The non-repellent termiticide induces touch and ingestion to kill the subterranean termites. Termites that come into contact with the termiticide feel the “slow kill” and they pass it to the rest of the colony in their return. Treatment has minimal efficacy when the soil is moist or overly warm, or when it is expected to rain.

Post-Construction

For existing houses, there are various ways of dealing with a subterranean termite infestation, depending on the extent of the termite attack:

Corrective Soil Treatment

To prevent termites from entering, holes are drilled into the concrete pavement on the exterior around the outside of the house, and chemical substances are poured into the holes and sealed with cement.

Dusting Treatment

The powder is added to termite trails so that the powder particles are passed on or carried back to the nest to other termites. Nonetheless, this approach does not provide long-term structure protection, and should be used in combination with corrective soil care.

Rodding Treatment

This approach is used to directly treat the soil by applying the termicide solution into the soil or landscape region using an injector. The termiticide treatment creates a treated zone around the perimeter of the premises by injecting termiticide into the ground to form a buffer between the soil and the foundation of the buildings. The termiticide may be applied before or after construction, under a concrete floor or around the foundations of the structure.

When termites workers tunnel in search of food through treated areas they are exposed to the termiticide. Not only is the termiticide swallowed but it adheres to their skin as well. The infected termites then spread the active ingredient by physical contact to other termites, gradually reducing the colony population.

Baiting Treatment

Termite baits are put in strategic positions to feed on the bait for the termite workers and then take it back to their colony for sharing. This is a fuss-free installation and does not require chemical drilling or pumping

A creative approach that is safe and non-toxic in finding, baiting and handling the issue of termite infestation. The plan includes the use of sophisticated microwave equipment to reliably identify the existence of underground termites, before strategically positioning the baiting and tracking station covering the ground and in-place.

The termite workers will find the will then feed on the bait due to their normal foraging behaviour, and share it with other termites in the colony. The active ingredients in the termite bait affect termites by halting the process of moulting that they need to develop. As the worker termites die off, the colony declines to the extent where it is no longer able to support itself, eventually contributing to its elimination.
